Young is for short-lived, Old is for long-lived objects.
In generational garbage collection, the heap is split into Young and Old generations. The Young generation is where new objects are allocated, and it's collected more frequently. The Old generation holds long-lived objects and is collected less often. For a Java web application, objects created during a single HTTP request are typically allocated in the Young generation.
